Since January 1964, SECONN members have kicked off each new year by jumping in for their own version of the polar plunge. For the past 58 years, the Frozen Fin dive has been a much anticipated fixture in the local divers’ calendar. January 1, 2023 kicks off our 59th Annual event – hope to see you there!
Whether rain, snow, or sun (warm days and bitter cold days), divers enter the water for a massive hunt of painted Quahog shells and any trash they swim upon. Once they’ve called an end to their dive (with a hunting max of an hour), divers trade their shells and trash for chances to win prizes donated by our generous sponsors. Post-dive festivities include warm and filling food, hot drinks, chatter, and laughter as prizes are awarded and raffles take place.
The proceeds from the event go to various non-profit organizations. The proceeds from our 2016 event allowed us to donate a number of snorkel sets to New England Science and Sailing out of Stonington, Connecticut. The proceeds from our subsequent events allowed us to sponsor multiple open water dive and advanced scuba students! This year we are also hosting dive training scholarships for students ages 16-24 for both Open Water and Advanced certifications.
